So forbe's, the master of lists and rankings put out a America's Most Miserable cities list, and surprise surprise, Philly was ranked in the top 5. Which based on how they ranked the cities, I can understand.
But what does this description really have to do with the criteria measured?
No. 5
Philadelphia, Pa.
Rank
Commute times 132
Income tax rates 102
Superfund sites 135
Unemployment 81
Violent crimes 134
Weather 64
Misery Measure 648
How miserable is Philly? The residents of the City of Brotherly Love once booed Santa Claus and pelted him with snowballs at an Eagles game. Maybe it's the long commutes, violent crime and plethora of toxic waste sites that has people grumpy. Philadelphia scored in the top 20 in all three areas.
Ranks are based on the 150 largest metro areas.
ok, the second part fine. But lets be fair here. I'm pretty sure santa clause was drunk or something at the eagles game. He deserved the booing and snowballs.
Objectively, yes Philadelphia seems to be pretty miserable. But if you talk to people from philly (like myself, ahem) I think most will agree with me when I say that Philadelphia is a great city to live in. I love Philly. I would live there again in a minute if I was given the oppurtunity too. Its been through some rough times lately, no thanks to the people of the city electing John Street to a second term. But what city hasn't? And there are few places left to go these days where there isn't some kind of pollution or increasing commute time. Last time I checked rush hour was a peril to all cities.
So I guess really, I'm just saying that Philadelphia is not as miserable as it looks on paper.

I love saying I am from Philadelphia. Although, I live in the "sticks", (as our sister so well puts it), I love to go back and visit Philly.
I am sure that NYC and LA commuters would love to ONLY have a 30-60 minute commute.
